Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles is a teenage story filled with love, friendship, and heartbreak.  Brittany Ellis is her high school’s queen.  She seems perfect on the outside, but inside her family is falling apart.  Alex Fuentes is a Mexican gang member who has to be tough for his family and friends, but really just wants out of everything his dead father tied him into.  The two teenagers are assigned as partners in their Chemistry class.  Through their lives inside and outside the classroom, they begin to trust each other and fall in love.  They begin to learn more about each other’s lives and personalities.  Alex helps Brittany find who she really is and proves to her that not all the world is full of backstabbers and hatred.  Brittany shows Alex what it feels like to love someone so much that you would give your life for them.  The twists of life in general bring drama into their relationship.  When Alex goes to do a drug deal on Halloween, Brittany goes to him and seduces him so he would stay with her and be late for the deal.  When Alex shows up to the meeting place, he finds out that his gang leader shot his best friend, Paco in place of Alex.  Luckily, Brittany and Alex called the police and everything is settled. Alex goes to the hosiptal to get treated for a gunshot wound.

While in the hospital he tells Brittany that whatever was going on between them wasn’t real, which breaks her heart.  Alex decides that everyone who is close to him ends up dead and he just can’t let that happen to Brittany.  Alex and his family move back to Mexico and Brittany goes on with her life.  When Alex comes back to the United States ten months later, he takes the beating from his gang members and is released from the gang.  With his new freedom he goes to college and finds Brittany, who is going to college in Colorado and taking care of her disabled sister.  He promises her to be the man she believed in before, and all of her feelings for him come back.  Brittany and Alex end up married and have a son named Paco.

This story was truely heartbreaking, but I absolutely loved it.  I cried so many times throughout the entire book.  This story reminded me of movies like Titanic and The Notebook.  I could read this book over and over again.  I would recomend Perfect Chemistry to anyone who loves romantic novels and finding true love.
