After by Amy Efaw is set in Tacoma. Devon Davenport is a teenage soccer star who lives with her mom. They live in a small apartment paid for by her mom’s midnight shift at Safeway. After starts just before Devon is arrested for abandoning her newborn baby in a trashcan. The baby lives and police find Devon when they are canvassing the area. Devon is arrested although she lost a lot of blood after giving birth alone in her bathroom. She is sent to a juvenile detention center and waits for the meeting to decide whether Devon will be tried as an adult or a minor. After follows Devon up to that hearing and slowly Efaw reveals who the father is and why Devon abandoned the baby.

Of the four books I read for Read for a Lifetime, After was definitely my favorite. Devon came to life and seemed like an actual person. I felt connected to Devon right after the first chapter. My only problem with After is the ending. I hated that Devon pleaded guilty even though it was the right thing to do. I think I feel this way because Devon would have had so much potential if she were set free. So even though After was the best book, it had the worst ending.
