Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is set in New England. Lia, the main character, suffers from anorexia and lives with her dad, step-mom, and step-sister. The book begins with the death of Lia’s old best friend, Cassie. Cassie suffered from bulimia and she died due to complications of bulimia. Lia, who still suffers from anorexia even after treatment, is unable to handle Cassie’s death. Slowly, Lia mentally unwinds and her anorexia grows worse. She decides to go to the place of Cassie’s death where she meets a wanderer named Elijah. Elijah helps Lia to come to grips with her disorder. However, Lia has to decide whether to starve to death or to truly seek help for her condition.

Wintergirls was one of those books that you really feel like you are in the character’s head. Anderson does this by writing sentences about how much Lia wants to eat, crossing them out, and replacing them with sentences about how Lia hates eating. It made her obsession with food really come to life. Also whenever Lia thought about a specific food, the amount of calories were written right after the food. Anderson really enables  the reader to get into the mind of a girl suffering from anorexia in Wintergirls.
