Ship Breaker: Paolo Bacigalupi

By: Mary Blanquart

Ship Breaker is about a young boy named Nailer, who is very poor. His father is abusive and they live in a community on a beach of people who break down old metal tankers for their scraps. Since he is so small he is on light crew and tears out copper wire. One day he is working and he falls through a duct into an oil pocket. His coworker finds him but leaves him there becauseShip Breaker [Book] she wants the oil for herself. Nailer miraculously escapes death. However that night there is a hurricane. A yacht is beached and Nailer and his friend Pima find it. They strip its riches from it, and while they are doing so they stumble upon a girl in the ship who is still alive.  Her name is Nita. Nailer’s father Richard Lopez eventually discovers this, and captures them with the intent of selling Nita to some of her father’s corporate enemies. Nailer and Nita leave in hopes of finding Nita’a people. There is a huge fight out on the water after Nita is captured. Nailer wins and kills his father. He spends the rest of his life in luxury. I liked this book. I didn’t get the futuristic feel, and everything always seemed so frantic. However, the fight seen at the end was amazing. That was by far my favorite part.
